There weren't many places one could watch sumo in the past and who would want to bother looking at two 'fatties' simply pushing each other out of a ring? Certainly not me! Excitement for this individual comes in the refined throwing techniques, counter attacks, combination moves, heat of the moment intelligence and the whole 'experience' when watching a sport like sumo. Asashoryu, being the man responsible for getting me interested in sumo with his combination of 'antics' and abilities has all this and more. That was back during the 2003 basho - my own first experiences of watching sumo. Since then though, the pair of current rikishi I like most are Ama and Tochiazuma as both offer a little of the entertaining kind of sumo that I love to see. From Malaysia. Benny Loh |
